No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
